Rental was relatively smooth as a Singaporean driver. The staff were friendly and advised on the insurance as well.
- It was surprising that there was no option for $0 excess insurance. There was the option to upgrade to Type B insurance which still had some excess payable and more coverage for the type of accident incurred. I bought $0 excess from Rentalcover.com which was cheaper but would definitely have been more troublesome to claim as it would not be direct coverage i.e. pay rental company first for any damages due then claim from Rentalcover.com. I had no incidents thankfully.
- Do take note that International Driving Permit (IDP) is required, which can be obtained from AA Singapore for S$20.
- Left-hand drive takes some adjusting to, I had to drive really carefully even as a experienced driver. Taipei City is NOT recommended for new or inexperienced drivers.
- Do try to contact GOGOOUT or the rental company beforehand to find out more about insurance coverage. Klook did have some rental packages offered with $0 excess though not sure how accurate.
Key gripes:
- The rental company did not have child seats available even though I had requested earlier as a previous renter had not returned their car on time and hence no child seat
- The rental company did provide another 3rd party company for us to rent the 2 child seats required. However, this was a 10-minute drive away to quite a narrow road and rental was TWD1800 for approx. 2.5 days, which was more pricey than expected. I also had to return the child seats first as there was also a security deposit of TWD10,000 (if there are any stains etc, be prepared to be penalised)
- When returning the car, the rental company was empty as the staff were at a meeting. Luckily, I had the Whatsapp number of the rental company and was able to contact them. There was around a 10-15min delay still while waiting for them though, and do be sure to park the rental car properly outside the rental store to not block the right-turn into the road (switch on hazard lights!)
All in, it was a fairly smooth rental process but be prepared to converse in Mandarin only (expected). Language barrier may be there for non-Chinese Singaporeans. I would likely rent the car in another county next time e.g. Yilan to avoid driving in Taipei City as peak hour traffic is a nightmareeee

Staff was friendly, courteous, and meticulous in going through the details of the rental contract and the car condition with me. She even recommended me places to visit. Overall fuss free. Do give yourself about 20-30 minutes from the time visiting the rental store to complete the procedures and get the car.
